Who We Are
The Bridges Over Water Scholarship was founded by the female pairs ocean rowing team, Team Ocean Grown. The pair, composed of Lisa Roland and Nini Champion, broke the world record in 2024 for the fastest female pair to row 3,000nm from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Both of the women work in the marine industry, Lisa as a Captain and Nini as a rigging technician, and avid sailing yacht race crew
The idea for BOW was born from Lisa’s own experience as a youth in care, spending her late teen years directionless and suffering from severe depression, struggling with addiction and unsure what the future would hold. At 19 years old, she found the sailing industry, and never looked back. Now for her, the future holds continuing growth and advancement, stability, and more adventures than she can count
Team Ocean Grown has developed a scholarship program to enact that same kind of meaningful change for our successful recipients. Our program is based on the power of mentorship, and supported by incredible educational establishments in the industry.
Rowing an ocean was amazing. Achieving a world record was pretty cool. The most phenomenal thing we imagine though, is to provide a new life for our scholarship candidates, and aid in building the next generation of seafarers and leaders in our industry.
